I agree on all three points. The big question I have is if there is ever going to be a downloadable android os which fits any device - based on generic functionality - so that we can install android on an older phone with less functionality and bring it back into the times, i recon my Sony Erricson w900 for exmaple would be great with a android os, and give me the option of writing my own apps - or do the device manufacturers not want this?

Another data point supporting my Android prediction:

TechCrunch article from yesterday: "iPhone And Android Now Account For 81 Percent Of Smartphone Web Ads In the U.S."
http://bit.ly/7f0K3u

Note the increasing "market share" of Android - as far as ad serving goes.

As a user of both iPhone and Droid I can agree in part with your prediction #1.
BUT:
(A) Android for one still lacks the polish (though that's just a minor issue).
(B) It still neglects the media part. Getting songs onto an Android device is not that well thought out and organizing playlists more work than on the iPhone.
(C) There isn't much coherence in app design which means buttons don't have comparable functions from app to app.
(D) Changing settings needs lots of digging to find the right menue.

That's isn't to say Android won't get better on these things. The iPhone is the iPhone and the iPhone OS is restricted to, well, the iPhone in its iterations. Android on the contrary will be on lots of handsets from different manufacturers, expensive ones as well as cheaper more affordable ones. That will make the difference when it comes to market penetration and sales numbers.

Kasey -- It's funny, but when I wrote this I didn't actually have the Nexus One in mind. I've been using the HTC Magic for a month now and I've been very impressed with it but I don't think Android will succeed because of any particular "hero" phone like the Nexus One. I don't actually believe in hero phones. I think it will succeed because it will be embedded in multiple different form factors of devices from multiple vendors on multiple networks. We will just wake up one day later this year and realize that Android is all around us.

I agree with you Dan, about all of your predictions for 2010! But now that the new Google phone has been released and hasn't had the success everyone had anticipated…does that change your feelings?

I think that Android will definitely compete but those iPhone lovers are tough persuade, in my opinion!!

Great post though. Enjoyed reading it!

Don't misunderstand me - I'm a Mac fan and an iPhone fan. I think iPhone will continue to "lead" the market in terms of innovation, features, etc... But it cannot "dominate" the smartphone market in terms of market size. Because Android is more "open" (multi-vendor, open source, multiple phone types, etc...) it has the potential to get into more hands.
